Pope Benedict XVI stunned the Roman Catholic Church and the rest of the world on February 11th when he announced he would be standing down at the end of the month. The German-born Benedict will be the first pope to resign in 600 years and cites his advanced age and deteriorating health as reasons for stepping down as leader of over one billion Catholics.
