ESSi is a Brooklyn-based duo with a deceptively huge sound. Using a smart blend of noise and hooky post-punk to achieve mind-melting dynamics, Jessica Ackerley and Rick Daniel draw equally from ambient experimental music and pop as they do from the more unlistenable far reaches of skronk (though, thankfully, there’s a satisfyingly steady dose of that in the mix as well to shake things up). Their music rides the dark line between groove and caustic disorientation, in a way that’s welcome for its willingness to truly experiment with what can go into a song. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this super exciting session!
