Fran is the musical project of Chicago-based songwriter Maria Jacobson. With touches of country, rock, and rockabilly, the versatile musician ties her debut full length record together with vocals that ebb and flow with masterful dramatic timing to tell her stories. The full band dropped by Serious Business Music to show us how they bring these songs to life. A Private Picture is available now from Fire Talk Records. Honey Cutt is a Boston-based trio led by Kaley Honeycutt. With surfy touches on their dreamy indie rock sound, the band sounds right at home on the Kanine Records roster, which tends to love an upbeat snare and catchy vocal melodies. The band dropped by Serious Business Music while in town for the New Colossus Music Festival, which ended up being our very last session in the studio for the time being. Coasting by Honey Cutt is available now from Kanine Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Motherhood is the Fredericton, NB, Canada-based trio of Brydon Crain, Penelope Stevens, and Adam Sipkema. A (rightfully) self-proclaimed trio of “deep-thinkin’ rippers,” they share an impressively high level of musicality and intensity that comes thru on record and truly shines in a live environment. With a twisting, propulsive sort of artiness to their heavy, HEAVY rock, the band manages to produce a gnarly, twangy, fuzzy sort of new sound without ever feeling like too much. They dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to blow our minds for this session. Dear Bongo is available now from Forward Music Group. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
The music made by Brooklyn band Kissed By An Animal is a perfect sonic parallel to musical mastermind and illustrator Dima Drjuchin’s visual aesthetic - bright, colorful, bold, and often, totally tripped out. With everything from psychedelic riff-loving wailfests to 00’s-esque sweaty dance party vibes, the band rolls along through the many genres at their disposal to great effect. They brought the party to the live room at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their world. Kissed By An Animals’ self-titled debut is available now. The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock band currently based in London, whose dynamic songwriting and epic performances have made quite a mark over the band’s decade plus history. Now, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their landmark debut record, A Balloon Called Moaning, the group has reissued that album with an additional version featuring Welsh versions of all 8 songs. Here, the band shares an intimate performance which, while a bit quieter and more acoustic than fans may be used to, shows no less power than their fully amped up shows. A Balloon Called Moaning (10th Anniversary Edition) is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Dave Monks - best known as the bandleader of Canadian indie rock band Tokyo Police Club - doesn’t waste any time. For the past several years, he’s used the downtime from TPC to work on his solo music with a focus on his voice and acoustic guitar, resulting in his first solo full length being released just ahead of a new record from his other band. Here, he presents a stripped-down taste of some of his newest tunes, accompanied by Alyson McNamara, at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Dave Monks’ first solo LP, On A Wave, is available now from Dine Alone Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
