DJRePete gets retrospective in this year-end edition of the Backroom Blues Hour, featuring tracks that made their debut on the BTR airwaves in 2012 including Bettye LaVette, Masha Qrella, and Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens. Plus, no New Year’s plans? The Blues Hour has you covered there too; hit up info for a Bay Area New Year’s Eve concert by Sonny & The Sunsets. It’s your year-end mix in the Backroom on BTR!
Prof. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera discusses violence and organized crime in Mexico. And later, Chaz Mannenheim gabs about the best rivalries of 2012.
BTR’s monthly blues hour rocks the house with blues from Damien Jurado, funk via Nick Waterhouse, and an acoustic blues track with the Heartless Bastards. Also don’t miss a double dose of new blues from Little Barrie, Virgin Forest, and the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad—love that name. Catch it all in the Backroom on BTR with DJRePete!
Wanna know a secret? I've got a fabulous jewelry designer on Sew & Tell today! (In fact, just between us, she might be the best-kept secret in Chicago fashion... but you didn't hear it from me.) Sarah Fox of Cursive Designs started out as a sculptor, studying at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. While there, she translated her talent for creating unique three-dimensional designs of lines, shapes, and space, to a smaller scale and began working with jewelry. Sarah's creations are original, incorporating references to vintage deco designs and sleek '60's mod, while remaining thoroughly contemporary and fashion-forward. Her pieces have been featured at Anthropologie, and even she did a custom creation for the Of a Kind webshop - a gorgeous hand-died lace necklace. On today's show, Sarah will share the "trade secrets" of her process, where she finds inspiration for her wearable art, and the influence of Keith Richards on one special piece. Plus, a fabulous play list full of new singles, in anticipation of the upcoming year's new releases! We've got tracks from Heartless Bastards, Rival Sons, Lissy Trullie, Lana Del Rey and more. Stay tuned to Sew & Tell for the dirt on all the latest and greatest in design and music. This is one secret you'll want to share!
