It’s Monitoring Week here on BreakThru, and fashion is definitely an industry that can use some monitoring. Some of fashion’s top players have come under (justifiable) fire in recent years for lack of safe practices within their production chains. This week’s guests are monitoring those practices and attempting to hold large fashion corporations accountable for their actions and decisions. Kaytee Reik is a campaign manager for Sum of Us, an organization that seeks to keep global corporations honest through public awareness campaigns. While they deal with corporate crimes from every industry, fashion has had an increasing ethical and environmental impact that they aim to address. On today’s show, you’ll hear from Kaytee about how Sum of Us functions as a corporate monitor, the challenges involved in holding major fashion retailers accountable in an age of long and complex production chains, and a few of the big box stores that are genuinely seeking to improve their practices. And later in the show, you’ll hear an excerpt from an earlier interview with cinematographer and director Andrew Morgan, whose documentary “The True Cost,” about the impact of fast fashion, will be out at the end of May. Andrew will talk about the impetus for the film, the research and interview process that has helped him shape the project, and why ethical fashion is an important topic now more than ever before. Plus, as always, I’ve got a great playlist full of new releases, including the latest from folk-roots artist William Elliott Whitmore, a recently released dreamy remix from Berlin producer duo The Trommelfellas, and another track off the beautiful new record from Sufjan Stevens. So join us for this opportunity to learn more about what happens behind the curtains of the fashion industry, with Sew & Tell on BTR!
