Situated on the Bowery in New York City since 1879, The Bowery Mission has been an important safe haven for homeless men and women. As homelessness numbers in the city this past year reached their highest level since the Great Depression, The Bowery Mission has diligently worked to gather as many donations and volunteers as possible. BTR Pulse’s Lauren Hawker spoke with Matthew Krivich, the Director of Operations, about their preparation for another bustling season of holiday giving.

As big businesses prepare to open their doors for Black Friday, local stores are getting ready for Small Business Saturday. Started by American Express in 2010, the promotion is aimed at rallying people to shop at independent and local businesses across the country. This year, American Express is offering special deals to cardholders who shop at qualifying small business locations, while many of the stores will be offering a number of discounts and giveaways to those who decide to shop small on Saturday, November 30th. Last November, we spoke to residents of the Red Hook community that had been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Despite the fact that Sandy has left a mark on the Brooklyn neighborhood, the strength of the community, and its organizations, have persevered through many obstacles. On Monday, April 15th, two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people were killed and more than two hundred others injured, leading to a massive manhunt, the lockdown of a major city, the death and injury of law enforcement officers, and the eventual death of one suspect and capture of another.
