Happy November! Can you believe it's *already* here?? In the spirit of things-that-arrive-ahead-of-their-time, I have an awesomely forward-thinking guest for you on today's show. (Seriously, this lady will be *huge* fashion news soon, so tune in and get a stylish leg up on all your friends!) Kelsy Parkhouse launched her line Carleen right after graduating from Pratt, and with good reason: her unique sensibilities had earned her rave reviews from both Pratt profs and outside industry professionals. Armed with an ability to blend seemingly disparate styles into a cohesive aesthetic, Kelsy took the plunge and debuted Carleen with a S/S 2013 collection, based on her thesis work at Pratt. While the label is still young, Kelsy's subsequent collections have generated even more genuine fashionista buzz, and on today's show, you'll hear Kelsy talk about the strong female fashion role models in her family, what it was like to launch a label right out of school, how Patti Smith inspired her S/S 2014 collection, and where she likes to shop for vintage goods in NYC. All that, plus a spooky playlist full of fun tracks from artists like Mr. Gnome, Lightning Dust, Vampire Weekend, and the latest Arcade Fire! So tune in, turn it up, and get ready to be hipper-than-thou with Sew & Tell on BTR!
A look at how businesses simultaneously make money and help communities through a novel economic concept.
Haaaaaay! Guess what??!! Sew & Tell has its first nail artist on the show today, and she's suuuuper awesome. Ashley Crowe is a Chicago-based freelance nail artist who started a blog called Astrowifey to document her passion for nail art, as she herself learned and experimented in the early days of nail art popularity. Little did she know that her blogging and hobby would soon transition to an incredibly successful career and cult following, but lucky for us, it did! Winner of this year's Refinery29 Nail Art Nation contest, Ashley's bold, expressive work is inspired by pop and contemporary art, rock music, and fashion. On today's show, you'll hear from Ashley about how her passion for nail art became a career, her role in the development of Tipsy Zine, the first U.S.-based lifestyle nail art publication, a few of her nail art role models, and insider tips on some must-have polishes, upcoming trends, and DIY upkeep for healthy nails. All that, plus a playlist mixed with post-punk and atmospherically autumnal music, including tracks from Franz Ferdinand, Man Man, Aisha Burns, Hookworms, and more. So tune in and prepare to nail fall fashion with BTR and Astrowifey!
Calling all aspiring designers!! You guys are gonna be SO excited by this week's show. What if I told you that there was a new company who would essentially act as your virtual assistant, helping you with every step of design production? A square one for independent designers? Well, I am happy to say that this ingenious company does, in fact, exist, in the form of The Ignited. The Ignited is a web-based design service, helping independent designers through each part of the production process, from sourcing to sample making to manufacturing. Once a garment is made, The Ignited offers designers a brilliant Kickstarter-like model to raise the necessary backing for a specific garment to go into production. On today's show, I'm joined by The Ignited Design Director Ellena Doe, who will talk about the development of this new fashion business model, their step-by-step production process, the logistical solutions the team has found that make this web-based alternative a smooth process, and more. Plus, a great mix of music with brand new Neko Case, more of the gorgeous new Volcano Choir album, and, on the heels of a rock- & punk-heavy fashion week, a set dedicated to garage punk. Fall is the season for new beginnings, so get back in the design game with Sew & Tell on BTR!
It's Authenticity Week on BTR! On today's show, Jordan Reisman chats with the creator of the award winning podcast, 'The Truth', Jonathan Mitchell. And later, Jody Stephens, drummer of Memphis power pop quartet Big Star, is on the phone talking about a new documentary out on his legendary band. Plus, last week in independent media and under-reported news.
Boytoy is a new band featuring members of You Can Be A Wesley and Beast Make Bomb. Split between Boston and Brooklyn, the trio had only played together a few times before their visit to our studio, but their chemistry was immediately apparent. With a bassless, twin guitar approach, they bust out woozy pop songs with a punch. They played a few of their new songs and revealed the secret to their musical magic (Spoiler: Brazilian butt exercises).
