I have a very special interview for today’s NYFW Sew & Tell; it was my honor to talk earlier in the week with designer Eden Miller of Cabiria, whose appearance in today’s Fashion Law Institute runway show at Lincoln Center marks the *first* time a plus-size line has walked the runways of Fashion Week. (Can you believe that??) I had a great time talking with Eden about her bold, classic designs, inspired in part by mid-century European cinema from the likes of Fellini. On today’s show, you’ll hear from Eden about how her love for sewing was sparked at age eight in a nursing home, her 20+ years of costume design experience, how the idea of Cabiria’s beautifully crafted, modern styles came about, her encounter with a terrifying, one-of-a-kind fur muff, what it took for her to prepare this S/S 2014 collection, and more. Plus, amazing new music on the show today from Volcano Choir, Typhoon, Still Life Still, Deer Tick, and more. So pop that champagne, turn up the volume, and celebrate NYFW with BTR!
Happy 5th of July! It’s officially the peak of summer heat, so I thought we’d cool off this week on Sew & Tell with my new favorite beachwear discovery: Australian-based label We Are Handsome. Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Sommers’ wild, limited-edition prints are the stuff of fashion dreams, adorning swimsuits and loungewear that capture the quintessence of summers spent in surf and sand. On today’s show, the two designers join me to talk about the start of their unique collaboration, some trademarks of Australian style, a few of their favorite beaches to visit, and more. Plus, I’ve got a playlist full of beachy tracks from some of today’s best Australian indie rockers – you’ll hear songs from Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Twerps, Cut Copy, Tame Impala, and more. So settle back on your beach blanket, tune in, and turn up your style here on BreakThru Radio!
In honor of BTR’s Earth Week, I’m joined on Sew & Tell today by special guest Natalia Allen, a pioneer in sustainable fashion design and technology. After graduating as Designer of the Year from Parson’s, Natalia worked as a consultant for top-level fashion brands, helping them create accessories and apparel that merged fashion with new technology. It wasn’t long before Natalia had seen enough of fashion production to know that it needed to change, and she decided to address those changes by launching her own sustainability-focused company and eponymous label. On today’s show, Natalia will talk about the path she took from corporate fashion consultant to sustainable design pioneer, what “sustainable” means for her company and production process, the carefully considered aesthetics of her designs, what it means to be a Young Global Leader, and more. Plus, the latest music from John Grant, No Joy, Beacon, Phoenix, The Thermals, and more in today’s mix! (Sadly, we have no update with Dane this week, but he’ll be back again next week to talk Mad Men and menswear!) So turn up the volume and celebrate Earth Week with us, as we learn more about how technological advancements can help create responsible fashion!
Just in time for Valentine’s wish lists, today’s show features one of my favorite jewelry lines, Nola Bella. Jill Scharmen has been an avid vintage jewelry collector for years, and in 2002, started to design her own pieces for fun. Not surprisingly, her bold, elegant, ethereal designs were quick to gain fans, and her work went from hobby to second job. Working by day as a fashion industry colorist, Jill brings her eye for form, attention to detail, and dedication to precision to her four gorgeous collections – Atelier, Vintage, Rockstar, and Timeless – offering pieces for stylish every wardrobe and every occasion. On today’s show, we’ll hear from Jill about how she got started working with jewelry, how she approaches new designs, the materials she works with, her own vintage jewelry collection, and some future plans that could mean exciting new designs for Nola Bella. All that and a ton of great new music in the mix today – the holiday slump of new releases has (finally!) turned a corner, and today you’ll hear samples from upcoming releases by Youth Lagoon, Companion, and new-to-the-scene Houses, along with the latest from Toro Y Moi, Radar Brothers, Big Harp, and Foxygen. So tune in and turn it up – we’re sensing some serious style on BreakThru Radio!
