Austin
Future Death is an Austin-based band with an amazing mix of swirling, chaotic post-punk and noise that few bands can pull off. Launched in 2012 by Alton Jenkins and Bill Kenny, and now with bassist Jeremy Humphries and finally vocalist Angie Kang added to the mix, the project has evolved substantially in its short history. Pay attention or these jams may blast past you so quick you won't know what you missed.
The San Francisco/Austin-based band trying to get you high without getting high.

This week, I’m joined by Austin-based graphic designer, blogger and stylist Ana Louisa Perkins, who offers some tips on easy style elevation. Ana launched her beautiful, inspiring blog Grown-Up Shoes in 2009; little did she know that it would soon lead her into a whole new career! Join us today as Ana talks about the path she took from a day job with a non-profit to full-time creative work at Kendra Scott, the value of professional connections, the art of styling, some of her favorite summer looks, and a few elegant party ideas that make hosting a breeze! Plus, I’ve got a playlist full of new music including the latest from Sharon Van Etten, Nashville’s PUJOL, and a sneak peek of the upcoming debut from quirky Wisconsin sextet PHOX. Join us today on BTR for an easy style + music upgrade!
During the 2014 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, the BTR Live Studio team set up shop at a lovely house on the East Side and invited bands to play music and chat in the backyard. Southern Tier Brewing Company provided beverages and the fine Austin weather did the rest.
On March 15, 2014, BTR threw a free, unofficial day party during the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Held at The Liberty -- a great East Side watering hole with a huge outdoor area, including a bar and the East Side King food truck -- we hosted a fun-filled day with music from Clouder, The So So Glos, Gringo Star, Diane Coffee, Milagres, Zorch, and Marijuana Deathsquads. Our friends at Southern Tier Brewing Company provided complimentary beers for our guests. Minneapolis noise band Marijuana Deathsquads is the ever-evolving, experimental project lead by Ryan Olson, Isaac Gale (whose videos for Bon Iver, Polica, P.O.S., and On An On you may have seen), and Stefon Alexander (P.O.S), and supported by multiple drummers and other performers contributing synths, vocals, and miscellaneous sounds to the sonic chaos. They’ve quickly become a BTR favorite (you may have caught their incredible session for Serious Business on BTR), so of course we had to have them headline our day party! Here, we get down in the dirt and on the stage with the band as they tear through their single, “Ewok Sadness.”

Mother Falcon, a group of young, classically trained musicians based in Austin, have a very unique take on music. Beginning as a jam session among a group of high school cellists looking to explore other genres, the massive band also incorporates violins, cellos, saxophones, and trumpet, piano, accordion, banjo, and bassoon to blend rock, jazz, and hip hop rhythms with lush vocal arrangements to craft their orchestral rock. In addition to entertaining audiences with their own impressive display of talent, they launched Music Laboratory, a summer camp for middle and high school orchestra students. The large band crammed themselves into the backyard at the BTRhouse for a very special session.

From his NYC synth rock band, Jupiter One, to collaborations with of Montreal, Regina Spektor, and Sondre Lerche, this singer/violinist/composer continues to stretch his sonic palette -- originally developed as a solo project with complex live loops, Kishi Bashi has filled out his show with a full band. Here, they perform an intimate session at the BTRhouse as a trio that includes Mike Savino from Tall Tall Trees.

This London-based duo (joined live by additional musicians) has crafted an album and live show full of fantastically dense, noisy, frenetic, fractured pop songs. For this special backyard session, they stripped their setup way down to acoustic instruments to play a couple of songs for us at the BTRhouse.

From somber dirges to jubilant stomps and sweet love songs, the band explores every corner of the genre with consistently pristine, cinematic results full of lush sounds. They stopped by the BTRhouse on upright bassist Sara Lynn's birthday, and we were happy to help celebrate!

The quieter, slower pace of Austin is appropriate for her folk and country-inspired music, which is soft and spacious, gently carrying her distinct voice and personal lyrics. Jess took time in the midst of the craziness of her hometown's massive music festival to stop by the backyard of the BTRhouse, where she treated us to a few songs (captured brilliantly by our Edwina mic from Ear Trumpet Labs) and sat down for a chat with Maia.

With a heart painted over her left eye, which she calls "a reminder that everything I meet and see, I will look upon with my heart and see it with an open mind," Samsaya delivers pop music with smart lyricism and touches of funk and soul. Existing in a similar world as artists like Rihanna, M.I.A. and Amy Winehouse, Samsaya has her own positive spin on things, and she stopped by our backyard to share some of the fun!

With musical sensibilities and a sound that lands them somewhere between the Kinks and Spoon, there's a lot to love here. They were the first in a long week of sessions at the BTRhouse, and they definitely got things off to a great start!
