With a new year just around the corner, I’m taking this opportunity to look back at 2014 on Sew & Tell. This week’s show is my annual year-end highlight show, featuring just a few of the incredible guests who have contributed to this year’s engaging fashion coverage. You’ll hear clips from my conversations with: Lisa Padovani, costume designer for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire; Gabriel and Sarah Chrisman, a young husband and wife in Seattle who have adopted a “Victorian lifestyle,” complete with historically accurate clothing (including corsets!); Kara Eschbach, co-founder of Verily, a women’s lifestyle publication with a firm no-Photoshop policy; and documentarians Ismail Ferdous and Nathan Fitch, co-founders of Cost of Fashion, who covered the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse. It’s a great, but by no means exhaustive, cross-section of guests from 2014, and I hope you’ll also take some time to check out the links to other highlight shows from the past year that I’ve provided on today’s playlist page. I’m also featuring music highlights from the past year – you’ll hear my favorite tracks from my favorite 2014 albums on today’s show. So join me as I look back at a year full of fashion, here on BreakThru Radio…

There’s binge watching, binge drinking, binge eating, but what about binge shopping? This week on Sew & Tell, I’m joined by former model, fashion editor and author Avis Cardella, who shares her experience with fashion addiction in her 2010 book Spent: Memoirs of a Shopping Addict. On today’s show, Avis talks about the seductive power of fashion magazines and media, how she came to recognize her shopping habits and patterns as addiction, her self-directed road to recovery, how the culture of her new home in Paris has helped her maintain a healthier perspective on fashion, and more. Plus, a playlist chock-full of great new fall releases including sneak previews of the upcoming sophomore LPs from both Czech singer-songwriter Marketa Irglova and Connecticut native, Northern California transplant Lia Ices, as well as more music off “Madman,” next week’s buzzy release from Sean Rowe. All that plus some NYFW chatter and more ahead this hour, so join us as we binge on great radio, with Sew & Tell on BTR!

Happy New Year! Welcome to the first Sew & Tell of 2014! Before we run full steam ahead into a new cycle of fashion trends, news, designs, and iconic moments, I thought it would be nice to take a look back at 2013. It was a year of genuinely remarkable, distinguished guests; so much so that it was very difficult for me to narrow down the content for today’s show! But in the end, I selected clips from a handful of interviews that I felt defined the breadth and diversity of Sew & Tell’s 2013 broadcasts. Today, you’ll hear brief excerpts from my interviews with: Jenn Rogien, costume designer for HBO’s “Girls” and the Netflix original “Orange Is the New Black;” Jenni Avins, fashion journalist for NY Magazine’s “The Cut,” Wall Street Journal’s style section, and her own site, Closettour; designer Eden Miller of Cabiria, who had the historic distinction of being the first ever plus size label to show during New York Fashion Week; and Sari Azout and Sari Bibliowicz, two childhood best friends with a fashion obsession, who turned their compulsive clothes sharing habits into one of this year’s hottest fashion merchandise sites. Plus, I’ve culled music tracks for today’s show from a few of my personal favorite releases of 2013 – you’ll hear songs today off this past year’s releases from Foxygen, Phosphorescent, Volcano Choir, and Chvrches. So join us as we say a fond & fashionable farewell to 2013; out with the old & in with the new on BreakThru Radio!
