It’s Network Week on BTR, so I’m taking some fashion cues from a hot new addition to the style network in my hometown of Minneapolis, MN. Askov Finlayson is a craft and quality-focused boutique for men, opened in 2011 by brothers Eric and Andrew Dayton. The storefront stocks independent labels from MN, the USA, and abroad, and is part of a Minneapolis neighborhood trifecta of cool, sitting alongside the Dayton brothers’ other two businesses, farm-to-table restaurant The Bachelor Farmer, and the elegantly laid-back Marvel Bar. On today’s show, we’ll hear from co-founder Eric Dayton about why he chose to invest in the Twin Cities culture scene, a few of the local and long-distance labels carried in Askov Finlayson, their newly developed in-house label, and the quirky story behind the boutique’s unusual name. Plus, a playlist full of indie Minnesota music genius, including tracks from the Eastern European-influenced Dark Dark Dark, Jagjaguwar labelees Peter Wolf Crier, Paste Magazine favorite We Are The Willows, and more. So take a wintery trip up north with me to my hometown, and embrace some its rustically refined style here on BTR!

What's the one fashion accessory you're born with? Hair! And this week's show is dedicated to your wardrobe's mane squeeze. Trends might come and go (anyone still use a crimping iron?), but some looks, like a simple French bun, never go out of style. This week's guest, Rubi Jones, has made a career out of mastering both the trends and classics. Trained in New York and now based in Paris, Rubi works as a freelance editorial stylist for some of the top French fashion houses and magazines. In addition to making sure that models look their best, Rubi writes and curates a fantastic hairstyle blog called She Lets Her Hair Down, full of practical tutorials, product recommendations, runway trends, and vintage styles. On today's show, we'll talk about both trendy and classic styles, and Ruby will share about her experiences training at Bumble & Bumble, her transition into editorial work, her number one secret weapon for hair care, some of her favorite up do's, and how to get that hot "wet hair" look we saw on all the catwalks this season. Plus, Dane will join me later to mourn the loss of his favorite hair care line and reveal his own worst hair decision, and we've got a great hair-themed playlist full of tracks from indie artists like Black Mountain, Miike Snow, Bleached, and more. It's a hair-raising Friday with Sew & Tell on BTR!
The 21st Outsider Art Fair opens in Chelsea under new management and features brazing new talent.
2012 was the year with the second most state level abortion restrictions, several new instances of extreme state secrecy including targeted killing and Gitmo materials, and listener mail about profiling a female high school horror fiction writer and how to be a better ally.
Happy New Year! I thought I'd take the opportunity, during this week of good intentions and resolutions, to talk with an expert in eco-fashion makeovers. Gretta Eagan - stylist, model, consultant, and founder of the fantastic FASHIONmeGREEN site and services - graciously gave me an hour of her time, and shared her thoughts on the past, and future, of sustainable style. Eagan's organization, FASHIONmeGREEN, couples as a great eco-fashion editorial site and your access to personalized "green" styling services and wardrobe makeovers. On today's show, Greta shares about charting the course to sustainable fashion in an era of skepticism, some practical tips for DIY green makeover, a few of her favorite brands and shopping sites, and some predictions for what's ahead in 2013. Plus, in honor of BTR's Look Back Week, I've assembled a count-down of my favorite tracks from the year. You'll hear music from Firehorse, Cate Le Bon, Tim Damien Jurado, Kopecky Family Band, and more. So sit back, sip your detox juice, turn up the volume, and learn how to detox your closet for 2013, on BreakThru Radio!
