The Best Musicians' Graves to Visit on Halloween - Buried Week

Though pop culture appropriated it long ago for skimpy costumes and booze consumption, let us not forget that Halloween was originally the day on which we honor the dead. No doubt, the memorials of Morrison, Hendrix, and Cobain warrant a visit, but here are nineteen other musicians who are no less deserving of a Klosterman-esque posthumous pilgrimage.

Amy Winehouse

The legendary contralto star, she died of alcohol poisoning at 27 years old, though her brother later claimed Bulimia was at the root of her death. She’s buried at Edgwarebury Cemetery in Edgware, London.

Sid Vicious

The remarkably untalented bass player for The Sex Pistols who died of a heroin overdose at age 21 after most likely murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Though his mother claimed to have found a suicide note expressing his wishes to be buried next to Spungen, the cemetery where she was buried would not allow it, as she was Jewish and he was not. Thus, his ashes were allegedly scattered over her grave at the King David Memorial Park in Philadelphia, PA.

Nick Drake

You’d recognize his song Pink Moon. He committed suicide by drug overdose at 26 years old. He’s buried at the St Mary Magdalene Churchyard in Warwickshire, England.

Hillel Slovak

The original bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He died of a heroin overdose at 26 years old and is buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA.

Howie Epstein
The bassist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, he died at age 47 from complications arising from his heroin use. He’s buried in Second Home Cemetery in Greenfield, Wisconsin.

Buddy Holly

He died at age 22 in a plane crash along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, the event for which Don McLean would eventually pen “American Pie”. He’s buried at the City of Lubbock Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas.

Sam Cooke

The King of Soul was shot to death at his hotel at age 33. He’s buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA, in the Garden of Honor.

Bradley Nowell
The lead singer of Sublime, died at 28 from a heroin overdose. He’s buried at the south end of Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, CA.

Cliff Burton

The bass player for Metallica who died at 24 when their tour bus skidded off the side of the road and Burton was trapped beneath it. Though he was cremated, there is a memorial stone near the crash site in Ljungby, Sweden.

Jeff Buckley

Tragically drowned at age 30. He’s buried at the Memphis Zoo in a spot overlooking the Sumatran Tigers.

Doc Watson

Johnny Cash with a little less rock, Doc is a folk guitar legend. He died at the age of 89 from natural causes and is buried at the Merle and Doc Watson Memorial Cemetery in Deep Gap, North Carolina.

Eddie Cochran

Killed in a taxi-cab accident while touring in Britain at age 21, he’s buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, CA.

Shannon Hoon

Head of Blind Melon who, apart from watching puddles gathering, also enjoyed cocaine, which he died from at age 28. He’s buried in the Dayton City Cemetery in Dayton, Indiana.

Ian Curtis

Lead singer of the post-punk band Joy Division, he committed suicide by hanging at age 23. He’s buried at Macclesfield Cemetery in Cheshire, England.

Alan Wilson

Composer, harmonica player and head of Canned Heat, Wilson overdosed on barbiturates at age 27. He’s buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery and Crematory in Everett, MA.

Darby Crash

Front man for the punk band The Germs and reminiscent of GG Allin, he overdosed on heroin at 22. He’s buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City near Los Angeles, Calif.

G G Allin

Since we mentioned him before, he’s the infamous punk performer that lead up various groups and gave excessively violent live performances. He died from a heroin overdose at 36 and is buried at the Saint Rose of Lima New Catholic Cemetery in Littleton, NH.

Jack Nitzsche
This prolific songwriter worked alongside The Rolling Stones and Phil Spector as well as fostering a healthy career in film scores. He’s buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, in Hollywood, CA.

Link Wray

He actually died at the nice old age of 76 from heart failure, and is buried at Christians Church Cemetery in Copenhagen, Denmark.
