PHOTOBLOG: Summer Streets

For three Saturdays, Summer Streets took over Park Ave and Lafayette Street, from 72nd to Foley Square in Manhattan. Almost seven miles of normally densely travelled roads closed to all traffic and the streets filled with cyclists, runners, roller-bladers, and free events. Each “rest area” has a different theme. One, sponsored by REI, offered free bike tune-ups, a climbing wall, and other outdoor related activities. Whole Foods gave away snacks and drinks and Cigna put on yoga classes right in the middle of 13th street. There was also an art exhibit, specialized bike demos, and a 160-foot long zip line.

Summer Streets is an annual welcome break from the speed of New York life. But the towering buildings and constant traffic just beyond the police road blocks are a reminder that Summer Streets is over and the season will soon come to an end as well.
