Supporters of Russian punk band Pussy Riot rallied together in Times Square yesterday after the three women, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Marina Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were sentenced to two years in prison. The women have been found guilty of hooliganism for their protest against President Vladimir Putin. The charge is from an incident in February when they went up to the altar of a cathedral and sang a punk song calling on the Virgin Mary to “drive out Putin.”

The march started at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church then moved on to the Russian Consulate on East 91st street. According to Gothamist and AFP six people were arrested for blocking traffic and not removing face masks while protesting the court decision.

The band has received an outcry of support from a long list of celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Madonna, and Sting.
