This week BTR went to Paul Kasmin Gallery in Chelsea to check out the Simon Hantai exhibit, Blancs.
Simon Hantai (1922-2008) emigrated from Budapest to Paris in 1948 and was quickly embraced by other surrealist painters of the time. Hantai created this particular series using the technique known as pliage, which involves folding the unstretched canvas, painting on it in certain places, unfolding it and then repeating.
This technique was emblematic of Hantai’s ambition to experiment with process-based abstraction. It also enabled him to give as much visual presence to the white negative spaces of the frame as the painted areas.
The exhibition will run until December 5, 2015.
