Celebrating Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL

While New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is America’s best known Fat Tuesday celebration, it wasn’t the first. The original Mardi Gras celebration was held in Mobile, Alabama in the early 1700s and Mobile residents carry on the tradition today.  This year’s Mobile parades included the Knights of Revelry and King Felix III, which you can see photos from below, thanks to photographer Edwina Hay.

The night before the big day, in nearby Fairhope, AL, the Order of Mystic Magnolias held a music-themed parade called “I’ve Got the Music In Me” with floats featuring Prince, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Justin Timberlake, live music performers, and others.
