If you want to hate your life, spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square.
Times Square is already a hellhole filled with tourists, people trying to sell crap to tourists and the occasional disgruntled New Yorker who accidentally ended up there and now hates the world. Now imagine that, but double the population and get everyone drunk—that’s Times Square on NYE.
If you don’t want to have a miserable night, then do literally anything else. If you want to take it one step further and have a great night and maybe meet some cool people and ring in the new year with cheer and hope, then here are some options below.
New Year’s Eve is amateur night in every city, but it’s even worse in NYC. It’s not just amateur New Yorkers trying to drink their weight in free champagne, but it’s also tourist trying to have the “NYC NYE experience” (whatever that is) and find themselves throwing up on the corner of 7th Ave. and 46th St. (Which may be the worst corner in the world according to most New Yorkers.)
Here are some more underground, cooler options for you if you decide to spend the start of your New Year in this bright and bustling metropolis.
These Nashville-natives are coming all the way to NYC to spend NYE with some of the coolest rockers. They’re actually also playing the night before with Stuyedeyed and Body Spray, but on NYE they’re playing with Thick and Plastic Picnics. It’ll be a guaranteed rager, with some cool people.
If you haven’t experienced a shindig hosted by Jonathan Toubin yet, then you’re really missing out. Try it out this NYE in Manhattan’s Home Sweet Home. And make sure to wear your dancing shoes.
A Night of killer New York bands in a staple New York venue. There will definitely be free champagne going around to toast at midnight, and Baby’s All Right is already an awesome place, so NYE will be no exception.
The venue hasn’t even been around for a full year yet, and it’s already been hosts to some of NY’s best shows. LCD Soundsystem just made their comeback there this year. NYE at Brooklyn Steel with these awesome indie bands will be epic.
This is upstate in Woodstock, NY. But you can get the benefit of saying you spent NYE in NY, without having to deal with the over-populated city. Plus, Bloodshot Bill puts on a great show.
Eleven DJs and Bands to keep you entertained all night long. Elsewhere is the newest addition to venues in Brooklyn, and it’s already one of the hottest—better check it out before it gets too cool for school.
