Thelma & The Sleaze Will Make You Scared, Horny And Empowered

Before you ask, there’s no relation to the film Thelma & Louise other than they’re badass women.

Thelma & The Sleaze is a southern band currently based in Nashville, TN. Fronted and birthed by the wily temptress Lauren Gilbert (LG), the music combines heavy rock ‘n’ roll and southern old school blues. The sound is sure to make any strict parent cry.

BTRtoday is a big fan of the band. Thelma & The Sleaze rocked out on BTRtv’s Live Studio. And we caught their NYC show back in June—a riotous event filled with vomit and stories about butt sex.

LG tells BTRtoday that there are three things she aims for during every live show. “I heard this quote where it was like, ‘if you go to a live show and you watch a really great band you should either want to fuck them, you should be a little scared of them and when you go home you should want to be them,’” she says. “If you can accomplish all three of those goals, you’re at a Thelma & The Sleaze show.”

It all started over a decade ago at a Sleater-Kinney show. LG had been playing an acoustic guitar her grandfather had gotten her and taught her how to play. At the show LG met a girl looking to start a band. She asked if LG played electric. To impress her, LG said she not only played electric guitar, but it was also “her thing.”

“I was like, ‘shit, not only do I have to learn how to play electric guitar so I can hang out with this girl, I also have to learn how to play it like Carrie Brownstein,’” she says, attributing Sleater Kinney as a major influence on her musical career. The two had a band together for a short time, and after parting ways, LG veered towards a more blues influenced rock sound.

“That’s kinda where it started—it felt like what we were doing wasn’t just entertaining and creative, but also was like, ‘wow, we’re tattooed gay women in the south driving around in a Baptist church van playing kinda radical music,’” LG says. “It was a very good vehicle to learn like, ‘ok, I can not only be loud and creative and have all this energy, but I can also disrupt spaces,’ and I think it had a lot of power.”

Once Thelma & The Sleaze was created, LG had to learn how to be a frontwoman. She admits it was a struggle at first because she had never seen herself as “conventionally sexy,” but now fits the role perfectly.

Thelma & The Sleaze – Somebody’s Doin’ Something

“I love entertaining people,” she says. “I did stand up when I was a little kid, so I would work in jokes with my guitar playing, which I still do.” At the show BTRtoday caught she told a story about a hobo punching her in the boob on her birthday.

LG says she’s working on completing an epic new album called Bras & Blazers with an amazing promotional stunt to coincide with it, but in the meantime she has big plans for Thelma & The Sleaze. They’ll be touring Europe and Florida this year. For the Florida run they’re touring with Quichenight and will be releasing a single for the tour entitled “Lonely Girl.” She also says a seven inch should be coming out in May or early April with three new songs.
