Forget Electro-Folk, e4444e Is Making River Music

Based in Newcastle, Australia Romy Church, aka e4444e, needed an outlet for all the melodies and words flowing through his head. Though his notebooks are still overflowing with ideas and he’s constantly adding more, Church was finally able to get some of that flow recorded.

“I’ve just always made music by myself—it doesn’t seem scary to me because I don’t really have to do anything that I don’t want to do,” Church tells BTRtoday. “I like making music by myself, I think it’s good for my being.”

He released his debut album, called Coldstream Road, as e4444e on Spunk Records just last month. Though it’s been described as electro-folk, Church says it’s simply “river music.” The ten-track album features electronic beats, acoustic guitar, and wavy melodies that all feel as if they create the flow of water themselves. Church’s lyrics are simultaneously profound and relatable, creating an air of both comfort and nostalgia.

“It was an attempt to make something really warm and acoustic, but also still have that otherworldly thing going on,” he says. “I like music that’s textural and melodic.”

Initially inspired when he was around 15 or 16 years old by the electronic club music in London, England, e4444e’s debut took a completely different turn once Church picked up an acoustic guitar.

Though Church has been writing his own music for almost a decade, just a couple of years ago he picked up the acoustic and started making more folk-influenced sounds.

“I used to do more electronic stuff, [but] I recently picked up an old acoustic guitar and started writing songs on it,” he says. “ I want to try to figure out how I can make my own sort of acoustic music.”

Unable to see friends and having lost his job at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown in Australia, Church says he was able to really focus on writing new music. Though Coldstream Road was already finished, he was still bursting with more to convey. Now, Church says he has enough music for an entire sophomore album that he’s excited to get in the works.
