Twenty candidates will participate in the first Democratic primary debates on Wednesday and Thursday. But outside the top contenders, most candidates are complete mysteries. BTRtoday takes a brief look at the Unknown Dems of the 2020 primary.
Tim Ryan, 45, U.S. Representative (OH-13)
Everything about Ryan screams average. His full name is made up of two very short first names. He’s got the kind of anonymous face you half-recognize on your nightly bus ride home from work. And he’s milquetoast even as far as Democratic primary candidates go, toeing the moderate line between centrist and leftist policies. Ryan’s a proponent of free college and Medicare for All, but would “accept Medicare for Some” according to Politico. He’d also seek to increase the defense budget and keep American troops deployed throughout the world.
Ryan’s main appeal is his inherent, sensible regularness. He’s a moderately moderate candidate with the Midwestern values to woo fence-sitting Trump voters. Even his weird relationships with (and employment of) fluoride cynics plays into is everyman American shtick. He’s also called the president “lazy” and said Trump “doesn’t give a shit about the Constitution”—an admittedly great quote. But his announcement left fellow Dems confused as to why he’s running.
