Bernie Sanders isn’t one for frills or high fashion. He prioritizes function over form, simplicity over embellishment. The policies Sanders’ champions are straightforward because he’s a straightforward kind of guy. It doesn’t matter whether he’s headed to the post office, a dinner party or a presidential inauguration—if Sanders is going somewhere, he’s gonna keep it simple.

Sanders’ inauguration outfit set Twitter ablaze. Several people pointed out it was the same coat he wore in the “I am once again asking you” memes. His mittens, meanwhile, were handmade by fellow Vermonter named Jen Ellis and apparently gifted to Sanders more than two years ago.
Bernie’s mittens are made by Jen Ellis, a teacher from Essex Junction, Vt. She gave them to him 2+ years ago and was surprised when he began wearing them on the campaign trail. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles. pic.twitter.com/ErLr29lY2t

The whole getup was perfectly Bernie, and naturally Twitter (and Instagram) had a field day.
