Almost as soon as the presidential debates got here, they’re probably gone. We’re certainly not complaining—debates are mostly empty political theater that do little to sway voters beyond a couple hours of bad entertainment (and making them anxious). Since Donald Trump has COVID-19 and doesn’t want to “waste his time” with a virtual town hall debate (read: take questions from voters about his dismal record), we might’ve had our last debate of the season. Both campaigns tentatively agreed to push the third debate back a week to Oct. 22, but given how frequently things change (and did we mention Trump has COVID-19?), they should probably just call it off.
Probably the only good thing about presidential debates in 2020 is the memes they produce. Yes, they also produce anxiety and fear tied to watching late capitalism crumble and a fascist American empire grow on live television. But the memes are good. And even though there were only two debates this year, there were plenty of legendary jokes to come out of them.
