Marianne Williamson: Unknown 2020 Dems

Twenty candidates will participate in the first Democratic primary debates on Wednesday and Thursday. But outside the top contenders, most candidates are complete mysteries. BTRtoday takes a brief look at the Unknown Dems of the 2020 primary.

Williamson is perhaps best known as Oprah’s “spiritual guru.” Her campaign has pushed back on the label, but it serves well to explain her powerful connections and alternative view on politics. Williamson is a self-described idealist and ascribes many of America’s ills to the political class ignoring internal emotional factors like longstanding anger and frustration with the political system. Her bestselling book, A Politics of Love, underscores her belief in the necessity for nonviolent revolution to save our planet and country. It’s the kind of quixotic messaging that sounds hair brained until you actually read her write or listen to her speak about it.

And Williamson’s politics reflect her worldview. She’s a progressive Democrat, and ran as one (unsuccessfully) in California’s 33rd district back in 2014. Williamson believes in a fundamental reframing of the American political system, which explains her support Medicare for All, increasing taxes on the financial sector and breaking up major tech companies like Google and Facebook.
