Bernie Sanders’ campaign is funded entirely by small donor contributions, which means it sends a ton of fundraising emails. The sheer number of emails and advertisements can fatigue even the most passionate Bernie supporters. Sanders and his campaign surely know this, which is why the advertisements usually feature Bernie earnestly asking for donations. And one filmed at the end of 2019 turned Sanders into another meme.
The ad is Sanders in a nutshell. Wearing a plain winter jacket and walking through a neighborhood, he bluntly explains the FEC deadline and “once again” asks for your financial support. There are no frills or gimmicks. But the ad has taken on a life of its own, serving as a totem of Sanders’ aggressive, repetitive yet simple fundraising style. And it makes for a pretty good meme format, too.
