Baby Boomers reaped the benefits of America’s expansive postwar capitalism. They bought houses on the cheap and went to college for even cheaper before exploiting their greener pastures for profit. They then turned around and shamed their Millennial children for being materialistic, lazy and financially illiterate. They truly are the generation of American excess, one who’s capital and politics will define the United States for decades to come.
But uttering a single phrase makes them crumble: OK Boomer.
What started as a snarky reply comment toward old Facebook users has become a viral meme sweeping the world. Merch is being sold. Hand-wringing op-eds are being written. A 25-year-old New Zealand lawmaker discussing a climate bill dropped “OK Boomer” in response to a heckling colleague in parliament. The subreddit r/okboomer has grown by 34% in the last 24 hours. And Boomers everywhere are running scared, offering up cries of ageism that would make their ancestors proud.
The ‘OK Boomer’ meme isn’t perfect. There’s a level of classism inherent to blaming every single member of a generation for the planet’s endless problems—obviously not everyone was in a position to influence power or make change. But for people growing up in an ever-bleaker world defined by endless war, ravaging debt and environmental destruction, ‘OK Boomer’ is the ideal rebuttal to anyone who’s spent years refuting the reality of our late capitalistic hell world or pining for the “good ol’ days.” It’s a two-word write-off dismissing someone who, because of their age or outlook, just doesn’t get it.
And boy does it make Boomers mad. Here are some of the best ‘OK Boomer’ memes out there.
