Unless you’ve been living under a joyless rock all month, you know that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march. The original was held in New York City in response to the Stonewall Riots sparked by the NYPD’s raid of Greenwich Village gay bar The Stonewall in the wee hours of June 28, 1969. Today, Pride is celebrated from Taipei to Tel Aviv.
Recently, restaurants and bars across the country have begun offering special Pride-themed drinks on their June menus with many donating part or all of the proceeds to gay rights advocacy groups. Here are three such cocktail recipes you can shake up at your own Pride celebration to help you and your guests show off all your true colors.
The Prickly Pride
From Bistro Boudin, the flagship restaurant of San Francisco’s iconic Boudin Bakery.
2 oz tequila
.5 oz prickly pear syrup
.75 oz lime juice
1 lime wedge
Shake first three ingredients with ice, strain over an ice-filled glass, top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.
Weston Lou, head bartender of Hakkasan New York, kindly modified his complex recipe to better suit the at-home tippler. If you’re in NYC this month, take the opportunity to stop in and taste the real thing for yourself.
1 oz Organic Mixology Coconut & Lychee Liqueur
1 oz vodka
.5 oz hibiscus syrup
.75 oz lemon juice
