'Cats' Looks a Mess, But Musical Theater Nerds Will Make it a Hit

Cats the musical is a must-see classic for any musical theater buff. But for anyone who hasn’t seen the 1981 Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, the trailers for its upcoming live-action film adaption look completely absurd.

The movie’s star-studded cast includes well-known names like Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson and even Taylor Swift. Watching the first trailer for this upcoming movie, you’re freaked out by the weird human-cat hybrid CGI characters. Then, when you learn who’s actually playing these roles, you wonder why these great serious actors would choose such a cheesy movie.

Trailer #1 for ‘Cats’

You have to understand that Cats is a favorite in musical-loving communities. So, of course, any actor would jump at the chance to be in it. Why? I have no idea. Personally, I rarely enjoy a musical. So I have never seen Cats and to be honest, I have no idea what Cats is about.

So imagine my shock when I saw both of these trailers for this weird-ass Hollywood product.

Trailer #2 for ‘Cats’

The second trailer gives you a little bit more information. Apparently there’s a contest and all the cats are competing. I’m assuming the competition includes some kind of performance art because that’s what all these freaky cats are doing nonstop. Swift gives us some weird cat chest shimmy and McKellen gives us a look that strikingly resembles the face of Smudge, the meme cat at the dinner table.

But as freaky as Cats may look, it doesn’t matter how annoying or weird it seems to the non-musical-loving community feel. Musical theater nerds will make it a box office hit. Even if only half of the world’s biggest musical theater fans go to see Cats, you know they’re going to see it over and over again.

So you better be ready for Cats. It’s coming at you as feisty as ever, and it can’t be stopped.
