Andrew Bird Is the Indie Yuletide King

Indie rocker Andrew Bird seems to really love Christmas. Known for his swinging, emo-esque, indie tunes that incorporate lots of violin, Bird is most popular for his songs like “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left” or “Sisyphus.”

If you haven’t noticed, though, he’s been releasing holiday covers and originals at least for the past three years.

Last year he released the holiday EP Hark!, but this year, he’s coming at us extra jolly and turning that EP into an entire album. Instead of the six-track taste of Andrew Bird holiday melodies, we get a full 13-track album of yuletide goodness. It features covers like “White Christmas” and “Oh Holy Night,” as well as some originals like “Christmas in April” and “Night’s Falling”—all of which confirm that Bird is here to bring back holiday cheer in style.

In addition to releasing the physical LP with a red vinyl version accompanied by 12 paper bird ornaments designed by his mother Beth Bird (how cute??), the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter has released an animated music video for “Night’s Falling.” Though not your usual holiday jingle, “Night’s Falling” is a sweet and somewhat melancholy tune that still manages to fill you with hope and light.

Bird will also be reprising his annual “Gezelligheid” (a Dutch term that loosely translates to “cozy”) concerts this winter with a live stream performance on Dec. 13. (Get your tickets early here.) The holiday spirit might be more necessary this year than ever. Don’t just listen to classic holiday radio to get it, either—turn up some original indie holiday tunes from Bird.
