James Franco wants to take you back to The Room.
On Tuesday, A24 released the initial trailer for The Disaster Artist, a biographical retelling about the making of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, the Vertigo of green-screen cringe cinema. Franco directs and stars alongside his brother Dave, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Hannibal Buress and a seemingly endless list of comedy stars.
The trailer features Franco as Wiseau, repeating takes of the most famous moment in the movie as a frustrated Rogen and company look on. When he finally gets the line right, the set erupts in celebration.
This is exactly what we need to bring back the original joy of The Room. It’s gotten too complicated since. Poorly edited Final Cut Pro videos and Vox explainers about why people love The Room have watered down the appeal. Franco is one of the world’s great actors. With his knack for playing bumbling weirdos, Franco is sure to make The Room great again.
I want to know as much about The Room as possible. It still holds the so bad it’s good crown, trouncing Road House and just edging Planet 9 From Outer Space (don’t @ me).
Everyone loves an earnest fuck up. The next best thing—talented actors who’ll bring this fuck up to the level of drama and farce it deserves.
The Disaster Artist hits theaters in December, but the wait is already tearing me apart.
