The Penny Loafer

In College, some friends of mine created a semi-ironic, if not totally crass, version of a beer-based Jungle Juice called “The Pants Dropper.” It consisted of: a 30-rack of Natty Ice, a handle of Crystal Palace vodka, and a whopping helping of powdered Country Time Pink Lemonade. It wasn’t the most refined party punch, but it certainly did the trick. Though I’m not quite ready to revisit this particular drink, in my opinion, the beer-cocktail seems to be an alcoholic treat that is criminally under explored. Of course there is the Shandy (half lemonade/half beer), the Michelada (beer, chili salt, lime, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, tomato juice), and a few others that make the rounds. But the truth is that beer-based mixed drinks hold their own, and definitely deserve some more love and range. I decided to create one that is mature, and refreshing: a drink that your grandfather would enjoy while sitting on his porch in Florida, in a rocking chair, watching the sunset.

And so, I give you The Penny Loafer.

What You’ll Need:
Beer (I used Sierra Nevada Pale Ale)
Campari
Grapefruit Juice
Sprig of thyme
Orange Wheel
Ice

Directions:
Fill cup half-way with ice, then pour beer to two-thirds point. Add 1.5 oz Campari (one shot), and top of glass with a splash of grapefruit juice. Garnish with a sprig or two of thyme for aromatics, and an orange wheel for good measure! Enjoy!
