My first encounter with the Ward Eight happened during my second visit to Highland Kitchen, a bar and restaurant touted on Best Bars in America for its cocktails. This is especially fitting because Highland Kitchen is located just outside Boston, where the Ward Eight originated.
Most Ward Eights include more than a dash of grenadine and sometimes they call for a maraschino cherry, but this one is a bit boozier than the classic. So, I cut it with extra citrus, and only added a dash of grenadine as well as some Peychaud’s bitters for additional depth.
What you’ll need:
3 oz rye
3/4 oz orange juice
3/4 oz lemon juice
Combine the rye, citrus juices, and ice in a shaker. Add a dash of grenadine and a couple dashes of bitters.
Shake well and strain into a coupe glass. Take the lemon twist and run it around the rim of the glass to release the oils. Then, drop it in and serve.
