As the Fourth of July fast approaches and Made in the USA Week nears its end, Thirsty Thursday is coming in hot with a cocktail truly inspired by the Land of the Free.
People may not serve sour cherry pie often at their Independence Day barbecues anymore, but it’s as much of an American classic as our whiskey. So, I thought, what’s more authentic than an Old Fashioned made with cherry pie in mind?
The answer, to put it simply, is not much.
What you’ll need for the cherry simple syrup:
1 cup cherries, pitted and rinsed
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar in the raw
1/4 cup clover honey
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Muddle the cherries as much as possible before combining the cherries, water, sugar, honey, and vanilla in a small sauce pot.
Bring to a boil and break up the cherries with a spoon. Then, let simmer for 25 minutes before turning off the heat.
Chill the syrup in a jar for at least one hour.
What you’ll need for the cocktail:
2 oz rye
1 tsp cherry simple syrup
In a mixing glass, combine the rye and simple syrup. Add two dashes of Peychaud’s bitters and stir.
Pour over ice into a rocks glass and add a splash of club soda. Garnish with the cherry and lemon twist to serve.
