The Iwa

There’s certainly no denying at this point that tiki drinks are making a comeback in a big way in cocktail culture. While they were once dismissed as overtly fruity, tacky, and ridiculous, mixologists are finding ways to bring them back to the forefront and I, for one, don’t want to miss that train.

Today’s Thirsty Thursday is the debut of my first tiki cocktail, which I’ve aptly named The Iwa. In Hawaiian, an Iwa is a thieving bird and this tiki craze is certainly stealing the spotlight.

What you’ll need:
1 1/2 oz dark rum
1 oz spiced rum
1 1/2 oz pineapple juice
1 oz coconut water
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
Angostura bitters
Orange wedge

Chill a tiki cup or mug.

Combine the rums, pineapple juice, coconut water, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Add two dashes of bitters, ice, and shake well. Strain into the tiki cup and add an orange wedge for garnish before serving.

Colorful straws and/or umbrellas are optional, but recommended.
