Red Knot is located on Galloping Hill Golf Course at 3 Golf Drive in Kenilworth, NJ. The chef, Ralph Romano, was previously executive chef at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center before heading up the kitchen at Red Knot. Last Saturday, my parents and I dined here for the first time.
To start, my parents and I ordered the mussel pot: Prince Edward Island mussels in a vermouth broth served with a side of charred bread for dipping into the broth. We also had the Galloping Hill salad: roasted honey crisp apples, crumbled goat cheese, bibb and baby romaine lettuce, and raisins with an apple cider vinaigrette. The mussels were good, but nothing special as PEI mussels usually are. The broth was fantastic and I found the charred bread to be a nice touch. The salad was quite enjoyable and flavorful and certainly not too sweet. The fruitiness of the salad paired well with the saltiness of the mussels.
Then, we each ordered an entree. My mother had the pork chop special with mushroom risotto, baby purple onions, and mint frappe, while my father had the pan seared striped bass served with house gnocchi, shaved asparagus, chili serrano, and beet vinaigrette. I ordered the braised short ribs, which was served with horseradish spaetzle, carrots, leeks, and braising jus.
The meat was juicy and cooked to perfection and I found the spaetzle and vegetables particularly flavorful. My parents each enjoyed their dish and we agreed that the main focus of each dish was paired well with the sides.
Red Knot boasts a full bar, a wine list, a beer list, and a cocktails specials list. I ordered the double pear (Double Cross vodka, Belle de Brillet pear cognac, and fresh pear puree) off of the cocktail menu. This drink is a real kick in the pants thanks to the cognac, but the vodka keeps it from tasting too potent.
There’s something particularly inviting about Red Knot. Although it’s located inside the relatively new clubhouse at Galloping Hill Golf Course, the air isn’t stuffy. Galloping Hill is a Union County public course and, thanks to freeholders, is now home to an immaculate events and conference center as well as Red Knot.
The restaurant itself is filled with golfers and non-golfers alike and the room is quite modern with well-decorated walls and comfortable chairs. The service is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. We even had the opportunity to meet vivacious Romano as he greeted a few tables during our meal.
All in all, Red Knot is a true gem and as a Union County resident I’m quite happy to welcome the restaurant. It’s open for brunch, lunch, and dinner so I’ll have plenty of opportunities to return.
