Fried fish tacos are one of the most perfect foods on the planet. If you’re lucky enough to score a stellar rendition of this classic treat, you will get the crispiness of fried fish, with flakey, delicate goodness on the inside, topped with crunchy fresh slaw, and a little bit of spice.

The tacos at the trendy Mexican joint Tacombi aren’t perfect, but they are fine. When I say fine, I mean it. They cover all of their bases, and they taste damn good, but there’s something holding them back from receiving a rating of “great!”

Perhaps it’s the swanky setting within which they’re served. Tacombi has three locations: one in Flatiron, one in the Village, and one in Nolita. Though there’s a “Taco Truck” inside two of the large, warehouse feeling locations, it’s not exactly your shanty taco shack. The whole place is so stylized; not really my thing.

Another thing which takes away from giving this taco the highest marks is the price tag. Though not absurdly over-the-top, the fish taco comes in at about $6.00, which is pretty much twice as much as you should be paying for your tacos. They say you get what you pay for, but when it comes to tacos, that just ain’t necessarily true! Some of the best tacos you’ll find are the absolute cheapest, least polished bites. But you better believe they’re packed with the most flavor.

That said, I ordered two tacos, and didn’t walk away hungry. Service was fast and efficient, and there was an adequate display of hot sauces to choose from. Tacombi is fine, people. Don’t avoid it at all costs, but don’t go out of your way to eat there either.
