Independence Day inherently means hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, and macaroni salad. Why not serve up some cheeseburgers that are just as simple as the classic, but offer a bit more personality? Stand out from the crowd of July 4th barbecuing Americans with this jalapeno jack cheeseburger topped with bourbon caramelized onions. Just make sure you use bourbon, not scotch. It is, after all, America’s Native Spirit.
What you’ll need:
1 large Spanish onion, sliced into rings
2 tsp bourbon
1 tbsp olive oil
1 1/4 lbs lean ground beef
4 slices jalapeno jack cheese
4 ciabatta rolls
Form the beef into four medium-sized patties.
Coat the onions lightly in olive oil, cover, and cook on low heat for about 15 minutes. Add in the bourbon, stir lightly, and cook until the onions caramelize.
Grill the burgers for 4 minutes per side, add the cheese, and grill for an additional 2.
Toast the rolls and place the patties on the rolls. Top with caramelized onions and your choice of ketchup, mustard, and/or roasted red peppers.
