It is a rare occasion that I find it necessary to write a follow up review of a restaurant. In fact, I think I’ve only done it once before, but in the time since my initial review of The Storehouse (West 23 Street between 5th and 6th Avenue in Manhattan) I have found myself with more to say.
As I mentioned the first time I wrote about The Storehouse, the lunch menu is what draws me in. So far, the best dish I’ve had here is the turkey burger, which comes with a liberal amount of fresh avocado slices, pepper jack cheese, tomato, and chipotle mayo served on an English muffin. This turkey burger is by far the best one I’ve had anywhere. The meat itself is juicy and the patty is thick. What seems impossible is the fact that the avocado is consistently fresh and perfectly ripe. I’m not complaining.
The chicken fingers here are the only ones I’ve had that aren’t overly breaded. Even when I’m looking for something unhealthy, The Storehouse has my conscience in mind.
Though a few of the BTR team members typically join me here on Fridays for lunch, we figured we would check it out this past Monday after work for St. Patrick’s Day as The Storehouse is an Irish pub. I ordered the corned beef sandwich off of the special St. Patrick’s Day menu and was certainly not disappointed. In a sea of New York Jewish delis, The Storehouse even successfully serves up a corned beef on rye. It certainly wasn’t the best I’ve had, but it could hold a candle.
The last several Fridays, I’ve been hanging out at The Storehouse during the crossover between lunch and happy hour. So, I order my food off of the lunch menu, but enjoy a vodka gimlet off of the happy hour specials.
For a full bar that focuses largely on Irish whiskeys, even the gimlet was done just right. Most places I go serve the gimlet up, but I actually secretly prefer mine on the rocks. I never request it that way, but the bartenders at The Storehouse make it that way anyway. It seems like a minute detail, but to me it’s an important one.
In my first review of The Storehouse, I mentioned that the waitress made me feel like a regular after only one visit. Now, our group is greeted like we’ve been going here for years. She waves when we walk in, remembers what we like, remembers what we ate the week prior, and even lets us combine the daily specials with the lunch menu prices.
Does it get better than this? The Storehouse makes a strong argument for no.
