Guess what? Fast food isn’t healthy. No big surprise there. However, what might shock you is what makes this grub far worse for you than you might’ve imagined.
A food study with the snappy title “Recent Fast Food Consumption and Bisphenol A and Phthalates Exposures Among the US Population,” predictably chronicles what effects frequent eaters of fast food might face.
It turns out that the health repercussions are a whole lot worse than consuming a little grease and fat: individuals are exposed to harmful chemicals, called Phthalates or plasticizers. Plasticizers are used in the production of stuff like tubes, shower curtains, and nail polish.
They’re also in your french fries.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that fast food purveyors are intentionally pumping their snacks full of chemicals; however, the large scale machinery used to produce the grub, as well as the gloves worn by workers, may transfer these harmful Phthalates into the food.
The chemicals have been linked to things like cancer, physical deformities, and fertility challenges.
So, your best bet? Steer clear of hyper-processed meals! If you want a burger, just grab some ground beef from your whole animal butcher and make one yourself, darnit. It might not be quite as convenient, but you’ll thank yourself in the long run.
