A Spin on Memorial Day Brunch

Sunday brunch is an American tradition and in keeping with the Memorial Day Weekend festivities, I thought it best to discuss some neat ways to spice up your Sunday brunch in spirit of the holiday.

Make an American flag out of fruit. I have to admit that I haven’t tried this yet, but I’ve seen several different variations of the same idea.

What you’ll need for American flag variation 1:

  • 10-12 large Kebab sticks
  • 5-6 large Bananas
  • 1 regular package of strawberries
  • 1 regular package of blueberries
  • 1 large cookie sheet

Directions

Slice the bananas so that each piece is about a half inch thick. Cut the strawberries in half. Then, alternate strawberries and bananas onto the skewers until all but four kebab sticks are filled. Fill each of those last four about 3/4s of the way, then fill to the top with blueberries. Line it all up on the cookie sheet so that it resembles the flag.

What you’ll need for American flag variation 2:

  • 1 medium watermelon
  • 1 pineapple
  • 1-2 regular packages of blueberries
  • 1 large cookie sheet
  • 1 medium-sized bowl (preferably square shaped)

Directions

Place the bowl in the top left corner of the cookie sheet. Cut the watermelon into small cubes, then do the same with the pineapple. Fill the bowl to the top with the blueberries. Then, starting at the bottom of the cookie sheet, alternate watermelon and pineapple in rows.

For both of these variations, don’t concern yourself with having 13 stripes. Your creation will resemble the flag well enough!

When it comes to drinking at brunch, I’m all for it an strawberry mimosas are the perfect cocktail for an MDW brunch.

What you’ll need for strawberry mimosas:

  • 4 cups sliced strawberries
  • 8 oz. frozen orange juice
  • 1 bottle of champagne
  • Blender
  • 1 cup blueberries

Directions

Blend together the strawberries and the orange juice. Then add champagne! Serve in champagne glasses and garnish with blueberries for extra American flair.

Serve these fruit salads and mimosas with all the classic brunch staples. Enjoy and Happy MDW!
