Personally, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. Sure, every once in a while I find myself craving something sugary, but it’s not an essential part of my life. The thought of desserts, oozing with caramel and chocolatey goodness doesn’t make me salivate like daydreams of prosciutto do.
That is, until I happened to try the Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie at Sweet Corner, in the West Village.
On some nondescript, sunny day, I was sitting at a cafe, trying to make a dent in my summer reading (I’ve taken on the colossal endeavor of reading Infinite Jest, an extremely thick and involved novel). The woman to my left got a cookie, and I realized that I was stuck with an intense craving for one, myself.
I went to the counter, only to realize that all of their baked goods were vegan! Now, if I’m going to get a cookie, it better be the real deal, damnit! So I grabbed my things and went off in search of my heart’s desire.
Luckily, just down the block, I encountered a spot called Sweet Corner, with a sandwich board outside advertising the best Sea Salt Chocolate Chip cookie in town. Perfection! I popped inside and ordered just that.
The woman behind the counter informed me that the batch had come out of the oven just moments before, and that there was not one, not two, but three different kinds of chocolate packed into the thing. Yes, please.
When I bit in, the cookie was still warm; it crumbled in my mouth. The chocolate was melty, and the dough gooey yet also crunchy. And to top it all off, the sea salt on top gave in an extra hit of flavor; perfect for a savory gal like myself.
I don’t often need a sweet fix. But next time I do, I know where I’m going!
