One of the most notable occurrences of 2016 was, of course, the release of Beyonce’s stunning visual album, Lemonade. The art piece was a journey through Beyonce’s marriage, sprinkled with insights into Jay Z’s notorious infidelities—the ultimate message? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. The concept album has awarded her nine Grammy nominations (an impressive, yet unsurprising haul for the superstar who already has twenty Grammys under her belt), and surprisingly it also may yield the rest of us a pretty darn good lemonade recipe…
In the final chapter of the album, entitled Redemption, Beyonce has a short spoken word segment where she says aloud the Lemonade recipe of her late grandmother. It’s nothing too outrageous or strange. Just a good old fashioned family recipe, passed down from generation to generation. She says:
Take one pint of water, add half pound of sugar
The juice of eight lemons, the zest of half lemon
Pour the water from one jug, then to the other several times
Strain through a clean napkin
There is one ingredient here that is slightly outside the norm: lemon zest. This small detail just might add that tiny bit of extra punch that knocks the recipe out of the park!
Plus, I’ll do pretty much anything Beyonce tells me to. She is a queen and we are all but mortals who can do nothing more than worship at her very feet.
However, I do draw the line at veganism: a trend that both Beyonce and Jay Z famously toyed with on a twenty-two day trial. Beyonce might be a genius, but that doesn’t mean that every single choice she makes is one that the rest of us can pull off!
We’re not all mega-stars, but we can still make the best of our lives: we can make lemonade too! So, if you’re feeling classic yet also adventurous and boundary-pushing (like Beyonce herself,) maybe give this recipe a swing. Or maybe don’t, and just sit around and cry about your sad life. Your call.
