It’s Journalism Week on BTR!

First up, we make good on our promise to bring you some lighthearted banter on HBO’s The Newsroom. BTR interns Timothy Dillon and Melissa Gerson join us in the studio for Third Eye Weekly’s first ever round table!

Later, we take a serious look at the Western media’s coverage of the Syrian uprising and the role that social media has to play in the conflict. Fadi Salem, Director of the Governance and Innovation Program at the Dubai School of Government and co-author of The Arab Social Media Report, joins us from Dubai.

Today’s spoken word segments feature the talents of Adam Falkner and The Spoken Word Almanac Project.

The Spoken Word Almanac Project aka S.W.A.P. is”A Year End Review from a Poet’s Point of View.” Think The Daily Show meets Def Poetry Jam. It was conceived by Darian Dauchan (’06 Nuyorican Slam Team Member, ’07 Urbana Grand Slam Champion) and co-produced by Malcolm Barrett (’01 Nuyorican Slam Team Member, Better Off Ted). S.W.A.P. culminates with an annual three-night event/show/poetry and media extravaganza performed in mid-December recapping and responding to the current news events of the year through an array of words and perspectives from a diverse group of some of New York’s finest performance poets. Be sure to check out S.W.A.P. at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on Dec. 14, 15, and 16 at 7 p.m!

Video credits: The S.W.A.P. 2011 poets hit the streets of New York during the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

Featuring: Darian Dauchan, Justin Woo, Joanna Hoffman, Adam “ShadoKat” Bowser, Yarminiah Rosa, Caroline Rothstein, Charan P. Morris, and Scott Raven Tarazevits. Shot and Edited by Sean Gallagher. Script Editing by Malcolm Barrett and Leah Bonvissuto.

If you’d like to submit a poem to be played on the show, feel free to send an MP3 to thirdeyeweekly at gmail dot com, but do keep sound quality in mind!

Finally, have we plugged our brand new Tumblr enough? Yes.

So without further ado …
