Today: Tuesday March 31, 2015 – This week’s podcast covers an event at the CUNY Institute for Education Policy entitled, “Challenging the Tenure Laws in New York State: Why or Why Not. The debate was orchestrated by David Steiner, former commissioner of Education for New York State and founding director of the CUNY Institute for Education Policy at Roosevelt House and the Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean at Hunter College. On the pro-tenure side we has a representation from the New York State United Teachers and on the opposing end was Devora Allon, litigation partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP who is working on a case to prove the current tenure program unconstitutional.
Today, We look at the perspective of New York State Teacher Union. A representative by the name of Keith Gross describes the opposing argument to creating a law suit against the tenure system. We learn there is a discrepancy in facts and what truly is causing students to fail tests and drop out of school. Gross believes the real issue is funding not tenure.
