In honor of the approaching Earth Day, this week’s Sew & Tell guest is a designer who has found a solution for waste management through stylish design. Sheila Odessey weaves together cotton and strips of plastic grocery bags to create fashion-forward, functional handbags and totes! Her Spring 2013 Collection is full of bright colors, whimsical ginghams, and beach-friendly bags. On today’s show, Sheila will talk about her decades of experience as a weaver in New York’s Garment Center, how she got the idea to turn plastic waste into a chic accessory, the incredible range in “hand” of plastic bags, a few future plans for her line, and more.

Plus, Dane and I talk favorite bags and gossip about the latest on Mad Men, and there’s a mix full of brand new music from Akron/Family, Oberhofer, Houses, and more. Get ready for some seriously earth-friendly style, here on BTR!

Sew & Tell Bag Picks

Dane’s awesome camo backpack from Canadian company Herschel is no longer available, but they have *hundreds* of other clean, classic, and bold styles to choose from!

Wes Anderson would dig these Herschel duffels…

DJ Marie can’t decide between the Everlane tote, backpack, or weekender bag! What’s your favorite?

Odds & ends from this week in fashion:
*Adidas has already sold out of their Boston Stands As One t shirt, but more are on their way. In the meantime, or in addition, you can donate directly to One Fund Boston.
*Come out to celebrate Earth Day in style this Sunday! If you’re in NYC, there’s a great clothing swap from 1-4 at Union Square, plus events at the all the NYC Anthropolgie stores. But there are awesome events happening all over the country, so check local event listing sites and papers for celebrations near you! Remember to take a pic of your green glory and send it to the Sew & Tell Twitter feed or Facebook page. : )
*Check out this beautiful limited edition spring scarf from Ash & Anchor for Of a Kind. Perfect for a Saturday stroll through the farmer’s market, or to bring a bit of cheer to your winter coat!
*Here’s a pretty cool opportunity for gents to win a bespoke suit…
*Steven Alan is calling all Pinners to join a Pinterest competition for the chance to win a shopping spree! Details here, and if you want some inspiration, follow DJ Marie and BreakThru Radio‘s boards, full of fashion, food, and beautiful design.
