Happy Fashion Week! I hope you’re all enjoying a week full of beautiful new designs, debuts, and drama. In honor of this special occasion, I have a very exciting guest on the show for you today – Tara St. James is the talented designer behind the acclaimed Brooklyn-based women’s wear line Study NY. A native of Montreal, Tara studied fashion at university before becoming Creative Director for the label Covet. As her concerns with sustainable and responsible production grew, Tara eventually left Covet to begin her own line in 2009. Study NY was winner of the prestigious Eco Domani grant for sustainable design in 2011, and it’s easy to see why: Tara’s pieces are complex, clever, rigorous, and elegant. On today’s show, Tara will share about the path that led her to start Study, her work with an ancient Japanese dyeing technique, some of the biggest issues facing sustainable production today, and what’s ahead for Study NY.

Plus, great new music on the show from Deerhoof, Animal Collective, The Fresh & Onlys and more, so stick around and get ready to take notes… this is Fashion Week with Study NY here on Sew & Tell!

Some of Tara’s picks for…

Favorite Artists

Yayoi Kusama, No. F

*Yayoi Kusama – “I’m so excited that she has a huge show here now. She has a piece at the MOMA, or did, for years, in their permanent collection. It’s basically white texture on white canvas. From far, it just looks like a plain white canvas, but when you get closer you can see that she’s used the texture of the paint to create bumps and dots that are raised on different levels. I have such an appreciation for that because it’s technique as well as aesthetic.”

Kandinsky, Unbroken Line

*Kandinsky – “I tend to prefer some of Kandinsky’s earlier work – he has even more structured and mathematical work that I really like, that he did during the Bauhaus period.”

Sol LeWitt, Drawing #1085

*Sol LeWitt – “I’m completely fascinated with those, because they involve so much math! I think it’s really interesting when math is included in art. I studied math quite heavily in high school, and I tend to have a mathematical mind as opposed to a creative mind. I think that’s why zero-waste pattern making comes somewhat easily to me, because I can see things in equation form.”

Favorite Museums
*Guggenheim – “I like to see artists’ work evolve, and I think the Guggenheim is perfect for that because you can actually walk continuously up through an artist’s life.”
