RATS AS BIG AS DOGS - Meet my new favourite local(ish) band, who are somewhat of a Supergroup. But I won't whitter on about that here. I'll explain that after their storming live set, so keep on listening after the music stops. Incredible! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
SHUDDER PULPS - It's not often that I get to have a great touring band play at one of the parties at Old School Studios, and it's even less often that they remind me of The Country Teasers and Guided By Voices. In fact, that's never happened until now. Check it out! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
JUKE & THE ALL-DRUNK ORCHESTRA - It's always a big deal for me having this band play, as they're about the most entertaining band around my neck of the woods, and they always get the room (and the people) dancing. "Budget Swing" is how they describe themselves, and that's not too far off. Let your dancing feet be the judge! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
PATRICK SALT RYAN - Let's just get this out of the way first. I love Patrick Salt Ryan. I first saw him play a few years ago, to a load of rude and obnoxious drunk people in a bar. My friend Sean Dougherty (manager of The Grand Victory) told me to make sure I listened to the between song banter, and I'm glad I did, as it's just as entertaining as the songs. Listen, as Patrick berates Sean for not telling him about a secret Black Flag show, and hear him battle with the tuning of his guitar. I don't know about you, but to me, this is entertainment personified. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
ANDY SHERNOFF - This week we have a Live On Location recording for you, recorded onto analog tape at Brooklyn's "Grand Victory" in June. Andy Shernoff is nothing short of a LEGEND of the New York punk rock scene, as bassist and songwriter in The Dictators, and now as a solo singer songwriter. And this recording shows why. There were a few people in the audience being idiots, and Andy turned them around, and had them singing along loudly by the end. Amazing! And I got to hear him tell some great stories, which you now get to hear too. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
BK & DAD - Wow! What a night it was! It was such a good night that it went on until 8am the next morning! The event was, "The All New Old School Studios Opening Party", and we had bands (The Barlights & BK & Dad), DJs (Mr Jason, Malice Do-Tell & Lynch Watson), the now infamous All-Star Jam, and of course lots of the drinking. Here's the proof, as we present to you BK & Dad, live at the All New Old School Studios Opening Party!
CHASING CREATION - This session has had a few false starts. First we booked a date for it, and the band had to cancel; then we booked another date for it, and WE had to cancel, as the BRAND NEW Old School Studios wasn't quite ready yet. But finally, it has happened, and it's been worth the wait. Here at last we present, Chasing Creation, live at the All New Old School Studios! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE JUGGS - It was my 40th Birthday in the middle of June this year, and to help me celebrate i decided to use up all my available money, so that I could visit all my lovely friends in New York for a month. I had a fantastic time, and whilst I was there, I recorded a bunch of amazing gigs at The Grand Victory in Brooklyn. I've already played you a set by The Suzan, and I follow it this week with an incredible set by The Juggs. Go and see them live if you get the chance. You won't regret it. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
UNSINKABLE HEAVIES - "About time!" I hear you all say (AGAIN!)! I know, I know, you've been waiting since, ooh, last week, for me to play the 4th and final live set from the Westsound Reunion 2013 Show, from Nectar Lounge in Seattle. And your wait was worth it, because today we feature a set of big solos, spinning leslies, and no holds barred funk, from the spinoof subgroub featuring members of Polyrhythmics and Funk Orchestra. I present, Unsinkable Heavies. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
RIPPIN' CHICKEN - "About time!" I hear you all say! I know, I know, you've been waiting ages for me to play another live set from the Westsound Reunion 2013 Show, from Nectar Lounge in Seattle. And your wait was worth it, because today we feature a crackin' set from Rippin' Chicken. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
Welcome to a special edition of Live at Old School Studios, this week the show is presented by Iain from Breakthruradio's Planet Beet Show. He's got two amazing live sets for you this week, both recorded not at Old School Studios but in the Cinema City Bar in Norwich for Iain's night called 'Original Soundtrack' or O.S.T. as it's usually called. First up we have the brilliant King Laconic who is a Norwich based Singer Songwriter with captivating songs and an individual and haunting quality to his voice. Following that will be treated to a great set from London based Rob Marr who plays a Wurly and writes great songs. Make sure you check him out too!! Come on people… Let's Radio!
THE NEUTRINOS - Well, it's taken 7 years, but we've finally managed to coax The Neutrinos back into Old School Studios for another session. This session is a teaser for the 8 gigs in 2 days that the band are about to do, in their own home, or "Klang Haus" as it's currently known. It's a special event for the "Norwich Sound & Vision" Festival, and all 8 shows are sold out in advance. I'm thrilled to have a ticket, so I'll tell you lot how it goes. In the meantime, you'll just have to make do with this equally intimate session. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE UMBRELLA ASSASSINS - Well, it's lovely for the Jayman to have some old showbiz buddies back in the studio this week, for their third Old School Studios session. They have a brand new set of songs, and I bet you can't wait to hear it. Well, wait no longer! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE SUZAN - I was lucky enough to chance upon this band almost about two years ago at a venue called Bruar Falls in Brooklyn. Then I was lucky enough to chance upon them again about a year later in the same room, but in what was now The Grand Victory. I was by that time a fan, and leapt at the chance to record them when they played there again in June 2013. They blew me away with the catchy songs, and boundless, happy energy. I suggest you put on some dayglo clothes, and dance around your bedroom like a child. OK?
BOX OF LIGHT - So, I bet you're all wondering what my glamorous assistant Conor has been upto, musically? Oh.. You haven't? Well, more fool you then, cos this is what he's been upto, and it's great! Helen, Duncan & Ros used to be in a band called The Snakes, who did an OSS session about 5 years ago. So, we're all old showbiz buddies. It's awesome!
HEIDI GOODBYE - Heidi was brought to my attention by my good showbiz buddy Camille Davila, who has been on this show a few times before, in different guises. Camille described Heidi as sounding "like Syd Barrett, only more bluesy", which I think is a great description. I was lucky enough to see Heidi (and Camille) play live on her recent tour, and she was amazing, and breath-taking. I had no breath left at the end. She took all of it! So, get your asthma pumps at the ready!
OLLIE RUDGE - Today's session guest was brought to our attention by the infamous "Johnson", friend to the stars, from Access To Music. If Ollie's good enough for Johnson, then he's good enough for us. And if he's good enough for us, then he's good enough for you lucky listeners too! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
COLOUR ME WEDNESDAY - Hurray! It finally happened! This session has been a long time in the making. Colour Me Wednesday first contacted me over 18 months ago, when they'd heard the "Swearin" session on this very show, and being fans of Swearin', and enjoying the session, they asked if they could come to the studio in Norwich to record one of their own. Well, due to lack of transport it didn't end up happening, but we kept in touch, and when I saw that the first date of their tour was going to be in Norwich, I said "hey dudes, why not swing by the studios they like to call old school after your show?". They said "wicky wicky awesome", or words to that effect. And here we are with this great session in hand. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
DOVE & BOWEEVIL - It's not often that we bring you a blues band on this show, but that's about to change. This week we have Dove & Boweevil playing a great set for you, live in the studio. There's bluesy guitar, with a hint of soulful vocals, with a dollop of hammond organ on the side. So, settle down into your armchair, and put on your blues slippers. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
CAMILLE DAVILA - It's with open hearts that we welcome back Camille Davila to Live @ Old School Studios. The last time she appeared on the show would've been around 5 years ago, back when the studio was in Bury St Edmunds. A lot has happened in that time, including Camille living on various different continents, until finally settling back in England in October. Camille's new LP is out on the 23rd, so make sure to buy it! I was really looking forward to recording this session, and I'm now looking forward to you lot hearing it. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
HELLO BEAR - Well, I've known these boys for a long time now, and I STILL don't hate them, so that must be a good sign, right? This is their 2nd OSS session for us, and if they continue writing sets of songs of this quality then it definitely won't be the last. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
HORSE PARTY - Horse Party and I go back a long way. Well, the invididual band members and I, rather than the band itself, which hasn't existed for very long. This session turned out right good! I hope you agree. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
RAINBOW GIRLS - What better way to spend a Summer's afternoon, but to be holed up in a sweltering hot recording studio eh? Well, this was made a whole lot better by the company of such a lovely group of people. Rainbow Girls is a very appropriate name for the band, as they all exude sunshine, even when tired. I wish I could say the same about myself.. By the time you read this, the girls will have just finished their UK tour, so you'll just have to endeavour to catch them live at a later date. OK? Even miserable old Iain Lowery (from the Planet Beet show) raved about them! They're THAT good! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
DELAY - The band formerly known as Outworkers today bring their brand of garage rock to the studios formerly known as, erm, well, they've always been known as Old School Studios, so that didn't really work.. Onwards and upwards though I say, and let the musical noise massage your ears in the only way it knows how.
KOI PARAGA - We've been wanting to book this band for a long while, and I'm so glad that it's finally happened. Danny Whitehouse has been enchanting the gig-goers of Norwich for a few years now, and it was with great happiness that I found out he'd assembled a like-minded band of equally talented people. And here they are!
MATT WATSON - This young man contacted us via our awesome Facebook page, saying that he'd heard and enjoyed the show, and wondered if he could do a session some time. Well, turns out this is the time, so here he is for your listening delight, Matt Watson! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
CAFE BLEU - This week, we have a return visit from Cafe Bleu! Only this time it's as a full band, rather than a solo act. We/I couldn't be more thrilled, cos our/my glamorous assistant Conor is playing bass and organ. Also, as a special bonus treat, we have part one of Tele Novella's 10th ever show, recorded at The Bootleg Theater in L.A on May 22nd 2013. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
SMOKES, SHOOTS & LEAVES - I hold this band indirectly responsible for me repeatedly almost choking on a certain Cola flavoured drink before, during, and after their live set. Listen on, and you'll hear what I'm talking about. Do not; I say DO NOT however let that overshadow the awesome instrumental music that they are about to play for you. Yes! For YOU! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON - We were lucky enough to grab David before a gig at Norwich's Birdcage venue, and snuck him into Old School Studios for an hour to get this session done before he rushed off to soundcheck. It doesn't sound rushed at all though, and is really quite beautiful. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
JESS BARTLETT - This set was a long time coming. I first met Jess when she was looking for gigs a few years ago. She auditioned for me in the basement venue of The Bicycle Shop in Norwich, on their upright piano, and blew me away. Eventually, we managed to get her into the studio, but that session was jinxed; ruined by an over-zealous weight-lifter in the building next door. But finally, we ending up getting a great session recorded. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE R.P MURPHYS - I was lucky enough to see The R.P Murphy's debut gig, in the basement crypt of Bedfords', in Norwich at the beginning of the year, and I enjoyed their set so much that I immediately (a few weeks later) offered them a session on this very show. Luckily for your ears they accepted, and the rest my friends, is his-story. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
LUCKY MYSTERY NOW ORCHESTRA - Today's show is another very special one for me. As regular listeners to my Seal Of Approval Show (also here on BTR!) will know, I'm a big fan of Lucky Brown and his music, in all of his many bands. To the degree that the debut single on Seal Of Approval Records is going to be Lucky Brown's "Still Listening", in June. I'm really THAT much of a fan!! So just try to imagine how thrilled I am to be featuring live sets from Lucky's annual "Westsound Reunion", which has been running for at least the last seven years in the Seattle area. Lucky for me, this, the first of two shows (in Seattle and Bellingham respectively), was recorded superbly by the lovely Steve Kennedy-Williams; so my heartfelt thanks again go out to you Steve! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
LUCKY BROWN & THE BUCKS - Today's show is a very special one for me. So just try to imagine how thrilled I am to be featuring the first of four awesome live sets from Lucky's annual "Westsound Reunion", which has been running for at least the last seven years in the Seattle area. Lucky for me, this, the first of two shows (in Seattle and Bellingham respectively), was recorded superbly by the lovely Steve Kennedy-Williams; so my heartfelt thanks to you Steve! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
MARI JOYCE - Today we have a lovely solo live set by the lovely solo Mari Joyce. This was recorded live on location at Iain Lowery's "OST" night at Cinema City in Norwich, which is held every other Tuesday. And yes, incase you're wondering, OST does stand for Original Sound Track. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
GUMBO VARIATION - Today we have an awesome display of musical dexterity, by a band that do justice to the Frank Zappa style that is their namesake (Gumbo Variations is from Zappa's "Hit Rats" LP). After re-arranging the session, due to a power cut at the studio, here we finally are, and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
SWEET TRANSISTOR - Today we have a rockin' lil set from Norwich's "Sweet Transistor". They were a 3 piece, and now they're a 4 piece. You might want to put your earplugs in, cos this is a loud one! But it's GOOD loud, not bad loud, so don't panic. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
DYING BREEDS - Regular Mr Jason listeners (Hi Mum!) will probably have already heard today's lucky band on the Planet Beet show. Well, don't get all cocky, cos now you're gonna hear what they sound like live, all playing together in a room, without any special enhancements, apart from a few squirts of Botox, and a little Nip & Tuck. But enough about me! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
ACE BUSHY STRIPTEASE - I was introduced to this band by my good showbiz buddy Nan Turner (Overdrive), from Schwervon! She insisted that we played their stuff on both Planet Beet and The UK College Music Show, when she was co-hosting with me a while back. I got a bit of a taste for the band, and when I found out that they were playing here in Norwich at Olive's Cafe I simply HAD to book them for a session. So that's what I did.. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
CAKES & ALE - Hurray! They're back! It's been a few years since we had Cakes & Ale in the studio, but they've now change their lineup, and are back, for your, and our, delectation. Thanks to Ed for driving my 8 track reel to reel machine from London to Norwich! And make sure you stay tuned right to the end, to hear Ed tell a slightly naughty joke, hehe.. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE GRAZING SAINTS - Was it serendipity that lead The Grazing Saints to us, and us to them, at around the same time? Well, no, it was Facebook actually.. I'd previously seen the band members in various other local bands, and it was only a matter of time til they ended up in the studios they like to call "old school". Let us now find out what happened next.. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
FLOORBOY - Well, apparently, according to The Guardian newspaper, Floorboy is in the Top 100 best folk artists in the UK at the moment! We'd certainly be the first to agree with that, as would Iain Lowery from the Planet Beet show, who regularly books him for his fortnightly "Original Sountrack" gig nights at Norwich's Cinema City. Now, YOU can be the judge! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
MEXICO - Now, if you're trying to search for this band on your favourite search engine, you'll need to be more specific than simply inputting "Mexico". Luckily, the band help you by giving you specific searching instructions between the songs. So, no worries there! With that all sorted out, you can sit back, or lie down, relax, and listen to "Mexico" (band). Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
CC41 - This week we have a storming set from Norwich's CC41. They really do create a very powerful sound from just drums, one guitar, and vocals. You really should look out for them at a venue near you soon. K? We certainly will be. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
THE THINKING MEN - Well, this was a fun session to record! We hope that the listening is just as much fun for you lot to do. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
FERAL MOUTH - Well, this session has been a long time coming. I've wanted to book Feral Mouth for AGES, but for one reason or another (I'm lazy and forgetful) it didn't happen. That's where my glamorous assistant Conor worked his organisational magic, et viola, here they are! So, put on your jumper, stick one finger in your ear, and hop around on one leg (???) to the sounds of, Feral Mouth. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
AL SOUTHGATE - HURRAY! Happy Birthday to us! It's our 300th episode! Did you think we'd make it this far? On this week's landmark show we have one of our oldest musical aquaintances. Iain, my co-host on Planet Beet, has been friends and in bands with Al Southgate for the last 13-14 years, and Iain first played me Al's music back when we first met. I've followed Al's career over the years, and his well-crafted songs have just got better and better, and continue to. I'm very pleased that on the 300th show we have someone that we've been championing since way before this show began. Thanks for listening, whether you're new to the show, or a hardened OSS fan of old. It's been a crazy ride, but here's to another 6 years! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
SINISTA & JIM MUSGRAVE - So, how many of you were at Old School Private Party #18? Well, if you WERE there, then you can try to listen out for yourself in the background on these live recordings. We all had a whale (or other mammal) of a time, and the All-Star Jam afterwards was as fun as usual. Possibly some highlights of that on next week's show. But for now we bring you sets from Sinista (presenter of the UK Hip Hop Show!) and Jim Musgrave. And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEITH BROWN!! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
STANDING TALL - I found out about this band by accident. Conor, my glamorous assistant, happens to be close personal showbiz buddies with Josh the guitarist, who also has a solo electro act that we were interested in booking. Then Conor said "oh, Josh also has a metal band!" And so, we listened, we nodded, we approved, and we booked them. Wanna hear how it turned out? Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
DARWIN & THE DINOSAUR - You may recognize these cheeky boys, as they've appeared on the show before. They've tightened up ridiculously over the last couple of years, and added a couple of new band members in the shape of Stephen and Ben, and Alan has gotten himself married and had a baby. Nothing so exciting has happened to me.. Maybe one day some lucky girl will pin down the Jayman, but not for now! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
MAGLIA ROSA GROUP - Conor recently saw this group play, at a show organized by Jack Pout (former OSS star), and he was impressed. So, he petitioned me to book them for a session, aaaaand I did, because if it's good enough for Conor, then it's good enough for me, the Jayman. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
TOM PEARCE - I first saw Tom performing an early live set in the tiny basement of The Bicycle Shop, in Norwich, ooh, about two years ago now. I happened to be there for the soundcheck, and was so impressed that I hastily set up some primitive recording equipment, and brought some of the set to you on this very show. Since then, I've wanted to get him into the studio to record a session, and I now I'm pleased to say it's happened, although not after a false start, quite literally! Tom's car blew the head gasket on the way to the session, so he had to reschedule for the following evening, and turned up in a hire care. Tom, we're glad you made it at last! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
CAFE BLEU - Now, I'm always interested in hearing new young musicians, especially when they name themselves after favourite LPs of mine, such as Cafe Bleu, the debut LP by The Style Council, from 1984. I'm just now trying to think of other possible band names, using titles of other LPs that I love... Pinkerton? Bernice? Something/Anything? They're all logical candidates for band names. So, kids, hows about you do your uncle Jason a favour, and start a band called Nevada Fighter? There's a prize for the first person to tell me which artistes' LPs they all are, WITHOUT checking on an internet! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
