This week on the show I’m featuring Brooklyn, NY’s CUTTERS. They are an indie-punk band who feel that they can’t quite fit in with the music scene in New York. As Pierce Lydon puts it, they’re “too punk for the pop-punk bands, not hardcore enough for the hardcore bands, not emo enough for the emo bands.” This hasn’t necessarily proven to be a bad thing as the band is making sure they get on shows with friends. They take their name from the 1970’s film Breaking Away where the town’s stonecutters are the punks of town, refusing to go to the college right there in Bloomington, IN. The band’s debut LP We Are The Quarry falls in line with this non-musical inspiration, and so I’ll be playing songs from that. I spoke with Lydon and guitarist Brian Deodat about sing-alongs, the challenges of being in a not so easy to define band, and the meaning of We Are The Quarry.
