This week on Discovery Corner I’m featuring Spanglish Fly from RIGHT HERE in NYC! They are a boogaloo revival band, a term I just coined but would be no less apropos if they had said it themselves. They play a take on late-1960’s Latin boogaloo music from El Barrio in Spanish Harlem. I spoke with the band leader Jonathan Goldman and he gave me an abridged history lesson on the context of the music. They last released the EP Latin Soul y Bugalu back in 2010 but he assures me they are tracking new songs which could reach lengths of up to an hour! We discussed the cultural context of boogaloo in NYC, the inherent silliness of the music, and how the band is at the forefront of the boogaloo revival “movement.” Vamos!
