Only a few more days to the New Year! On this episode of Discovery Corner, I’m going to be “looking back” at the year I had with the show. This show will coincide with “The Best Music No One Told You to Like in 2013” post I did featuring the best of the Discovery Artists of the year.
This week on Discovery Corner I am featuring Sacramento, CA-based World Hood. They are an Afro-Latin dub group but it really takes elements of hip-hop and afrobeat as well. Aside from that, they operate a community center in Sacramento called the Sol Collective that has music workshops as well as generally serving the community. I spoke to half of the duo, Anand Parmar, who provides the beats with his wife Estrella Hood on vocals. We discussed what exactly the Center does, growing up in Zambia and what the meaning behind their 2012 EP Mundo Libre is. Vamanos!
This week on Discovery Corner I’m featuring Austin, TX’s Balmorhea. They are a “minimalist instrumental” band, though according to the band they just play “music.” Their songs are dramatic and powerful and they should definitely be used as the soundtrack for a “tour de force” film. The last record they released was Stranger in 2012 so when I spoke to Michael Muller and Rob Lowe of the band, they were decompressing from months and months of touring and promoting. We spoke about which one in the band is the “tech guy”, what Austin is like this time of year and the cognitive process of creation. Get learned! This week on Discovery Corner I’m featuring Brooklyn indie pop sensations, Lucius! They released their debut LP Wildewoman in mid-October to critical acclaim and fanfare. The band is comprised of two lead singers, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe, who offer a “two as one” vocal duality as well as an aesthetically appealing symmetrical stage setup. I spoke to Holly about her unique chemistry with Jess, the concept of duality and symmetry that Lucius adheres by, and what it is to be a Wildewoman. Enjoy this one! This week on Discovery Corner I’m featuring Southern, VT’s Gold Town. They play down ‘n dirty traditional bluegrass infused with a punk rock energy. They are known to rock a bar from time to time but they’re also on the Vermont farmer’s market circuit. You’ll exclusively hear songs from their 2011 self-titled release, but Stearns let it be known that they are working on new music that features more fiddle. We discussed the influence punk had on their style, the story behind the song “Rutland”, and how they would compare themselves to more popular bands with banjos. Enjoy, folks! This week on the show I am proud to present The Big Takeover! They are a reggae/ska ensemble straight out of the beautiful little mountain town of New Paltz, NY where I spent four years getting an anthropology degree and singing a cappella. I spoke with the lead singer Nee Nee Rushie, originally from Jamaica, about how her experience of adjusting to life in New York impacted the music she now plays. They are set to release the record Children of the Rhythm in January and I was lucky enough to snag a song from it. Nee Nee and I discussed teaching methods in Newburgh, the struggles of adapting to high school and how music makes it all better. This week on the ol’ Discovery Corner I feature the New York City-based jazz pianist Helen Sung. I caught her as she had just returned from a trip to India at the Jus’ Jazz Festival and preparing for a trip to Osaka, Japan a few days after. The last record she released was Re-Conception in 2011 but she is currently in the mindset of promoting her upcoming record, Anthem For a New Day. I was able to score two songs from it for the show! We discussed the global reach of jazz, her own cathartic experiences at a Harry Connick Jr. concert and where modern jazz is headed. Get jazzed! This week on the show I feature EO, the duo from Spokane, WA and Adelaide, AU respectively. They function in pretty much the same way the famed Postal Service does, sending parts of songs individually until it creates a cohesive whole. The method has been working as Jarrod Manuel and Drew Sullivan have done this in their other band, City of Satellites. EO has something to show for it, the recently released EP Somewhere Human. I speak to Drew Sullivan via telephone and we discuss the brotherhood he feels with Manuel, the creative process EO has without being geographically together, and his feelings on Washington dubstep. This week on the show I feature Brooklyn, NY’s Porcelain Raft. The band is comprised of the Italian-born musician, Mauro Remiddi and more recently, a live band that he tours with. The band most recently released the LP Permanent Signal in August, ostensibly a dreamy album but as Remiddi explained to me,  it’s completely literal and an accurate depiction of his life post-tour. We discussed his Spinal Tap-esque moment on tour, the moves he’s made in his life, and how his videos act as performance pieces. Get down!
