Charly Bliss is one of those bands that immediately brings to mind a slew of favorites, especially for those of us who had their musical awakening in the 90s. Reminiscent of the awesomely fuzzy, poppy goodness of Veruca Salt, The Breeders, That Dog, and Letters To Cleo, the band proudly identifies their genre as “bubblegrunge” (was that a word back then? It’s likely, but either way it’s super appropriate for them right here and now) and does a killer job of nailing that vibe and improving upon it, updating the sound and look for the 2010s while still conveying that feeling of throwing a party in your teenage bedroom. Eve, Spencer, Sam, and Dan have a really great thing going on, and they stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, for this session. Guppy by Charly Bliss is available now from Barsuk Records.
Henry Jamison is a songwriter currently based in Vermont. Previously, we got to know his hauntingly poetic style through his previous Maine-based band, The Milkman’s Union. Now, a few years later, Henry has been crafting a strong body of solo work and hitting the road, racking up millions of streams of his music along the way. Check out this intimate performance recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn! The Rains EP is available now.
The Nashville-based brothers, bandmates, producers, and co-songwriters Michael Ford, Jr., and Ben Ford cut their teeth in the music industry with their previous band, The Apache Relay, which focused on going big with both sound and personnel. With Airpark, they’ve shifted their focus to simpler, tighter, but still highly impactful pop music, which they say is “inspired by minimalism, melody and groove-heavy percussion.” See and hear for yourself in this session, recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Airpark’s debut, Early Works, Volume 1, is available now.
From made up psychedelic ouija pop band to totally real - as in loud, fast, and sweaty real - band, this supergroup composed of members of Fat White Family and the Eccentronic Research Council have come together to destroy pop music and rebuild it. Not sure they’re up for the challenge? Take a look and a listen, and we’re sure you’ll be convinced. They brought the chaos to Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn for this eye-opening session.   Interplanetary Class Classics is available now from Chimera Music.
Matisyahu -- first known as a jam-loving, spiritually-influenced, and passionate singer -- has evolved over that past decade from a Grammy-nominated, #1 single performer to a full-on band. Rounded out by notable improviser Aaron Dugan, Dub Trio bassist Stu Brooks, percussionist/drummer Tim Keiper, and Addison Groove Project founder Rob Marscher, Matisyahu has amassed a fully capable band to keep up with his intense grooves and follow into jam territory on a whim. The group joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share a bit of what their new album has to offer in this very special session.   Matisyahu’s new album, Undercurrent, is available now.
Rachel Trachtenburg is back at it with a new band. We know her from the cute and quirky Supercute!, The Prettiots, and The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, but now she’s heading up a dreamy indie rock band - with some post-punk touches - that we’re really digging. At this point, Rachel is a true veteran of the local scene, having been actively recording and performing for over 15 years now, and all that experience certainly comes through. With Wooing, she takes more of a lead than ever before, and is joined by some excellent musicians to help out (here you may recognize drummer Rosie Slater from New Myths). Check them out in this session recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, and let their new EP be your summer soundtrack!   Wooing’s debut EP, Daydream Time Machine, is available now.
Songwriter Walter Martin is known as a lyricist and multi-instrumentalist for the band The Walkmen - and before that, Jonathan Fire*Eater. His solo career began a few years ago with a record of children’s music, and since then, he’s held onto that childlike wonder and quirky melodic sense of storytelling while continuing to craft fun folk songs for grownups. He joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO for a listen to some of his freshest tunes in this special session.   Walter Martin’s new album, My Kinda Music, is available now.
West Virginia songwriter William Matheny cut his teeth in the excellent band Southeast Engine before setting out on his current solo endeavor. Using Americana, country, and folk as a springboard for his powerful, literate indie rock story songs, Matheny has crafted a body of work to lure even the most devout indie snobs to the twangy side. He dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO with his band to show us just how they rock out down south. Strange Constellations is available now from Misra Records.
Blank Range is a Nashville rock n’ roll band -- which could mean any of a million things, but in this particular case, it means that this garagey rock band incorporates just enough classic rock (and twang) to give them an edge on other newcomers. Blank Range lands closer to Replacements territory than Johnny Cash, but the common thread is a weight to their pop songwriting that makes them stand out. The guys swung by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to show us how it’s done.   Vista Bent by Blank Range is available now from Thirty Tigers.
